With the Boston Red Sox coming off of a Championship season, and the Tampa Bay Ray's winning 92 game last season, the AL East already has high expectations to be a tough Division. Every team has made off-season moves/signings, and will be attempting to knock off the Champions, the Boston Red Sox.
The team that I, and many others, are intrigued by the most are the New York Yankees. The Yankees spent half a BILLION dollars this off-season and made some big headlines in trades/signings. The Yankees stole Jacoby Ellsbury from the Boston Red Sox, and they signed Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran, and Brian Roberts. Of course, then there is Masahiro Tanaka, who the Yankees signed out of Asia.
The only real question, after the off-season, is: Was the 500 Million dollars worth it? Will the Yankees make a Championship run, or even make the playoffs?
The Yankees upgraded one of their biggest needs, as they added many offensive threats. Ellsbury adds help to getting on base at the start of the line up, and stealing bases (Led league with 58). Brian McCann is a huge upgrade from Chris Stewart, as McCann averages a better batting average, and totaled more RBI's and HR's. Carlos Beltran will add more hitting, as he averages a near .300 batting average. Brian Roberts cannot replace Cano, but at least the Yankees got an average replacement. Finally, Brian Roberts and Brendan Ryan are very valuable replacements to any injuries for the Yankees. Assuming the new additions stay healthy, and the stars recover from health issues, the Yankees should have no problem with the batting line up.
On the other hand, the Yankees need to be worried about their pitching. The Yankees signed Tanaka, but he has not pitched one game in the MLB. C.C. Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda are coming off of average years(4.78 ERA for CC, 3.5 ERA for Kuroda). However, the Yankees do have valuable pitchers later in the rotation, as Ivan Nova showed great talent last year (9-6 record, 3.10 ERA). Overall, from a pessimist point of view, the Yankees pitching could be mediocre this year. However, from an optimist point of view, if CC and Hiroki recover from shaky starts, and Tanaka proves he can pitch in the MLB, the Yankees will have a really good starting rotation.
Overall, the Yankees have enough talent and coaching to make win the AL East. Of course, there are many other factors, like being able to defeat the Red Sox and Rays, INJURIES (Could derail Yankees), and recovering from losing Cano and Rivera. However, the Yankees have bought out with the 500 Million dollars, and are ready to make noise in the AL East.
What do you think? Are the Yankees ready to pass the Rays and Red Sox in the AL East? Leave your comments in the comment section below.
